Nabil Allam:The World

The world would be a much better place if there were fewer accidents .Accidents happen daily and regularly these days. One of the most popular daily accidents in the world is the car accident. This kind of accidents leaves pain behind it for the victims’ families .Many people think that they will never get involved in car accidents, but car accidents have many causes which can human causes or out of control causes. And car accidents lead to many tragic effects for the accident parties. So what causes the problem? There are many different reasons for the car accident .distraction while driving is the important car accident cause. They set their eyes on something else and get into crush with another car or wall or anything .Nowadays cell phones applications are only reason of the driver distraction on the road .The ignorance or the lack of knowledge of the driver can be a reason for the accident .Maybe the passing during the red signal is on, on a highway, can lead to a mortal accident .Another major reason is drinking while driving. People do not know how dangerous is to drive when you are drunk ,and being drunk means that you are drank very much so you are out of control .the fatigue of driving for many hours lead to car accidents .The fatigue driver fall asleep without noticing himself and get an accident with others vehicles .the speeding is also one of the reasons of accidents .when you are speedy ,any unexpected movement can make the car out of the road and kill the speedy driver and hurting other innocent people on the road . So it is your responsibility to be awake and alarmed from reckless drivers on the road. There is no solution for car accidents. This problem isn’t individual problem so the solution can be by awareness campaigns to all society categories. Everyone should obey and follow the rules to avoid the accidents. Car accidents can have many dangerous and mortal effects .The first major effect is the death. A person dies in a car accident every twelve minutes and each year car crashes kill 40,000 people only in USA .The other major effect is the injuries ,the durable injuries .Most of car accidents sufferers have paralysis after the accident . The economical side is an important effect of car accidents too .Every car accident has his price, and his price is the value of the cars damaged and other things that can be near the road during the accident. Psychological problems are another important effect. The recent studies show that most of car accidents sufferers have big psychological problems which can stay with them all the live ,they can remembered the last seconds before the accident . The effects of car accidents can’t be benefit in any way, it is always not good. Car accidents have many causes and many effects .Causes and effects weren’t harming only the driver, but affect the people around him. Accidents are a non-volitional movement, so think about yourself and about your family .Be aware and stay attentive while driving.

Kassem Al-Hellani:Overpopulation

Overpopulation Nowadays, the world is facing many problems which are dangerous, and they threat the human beings. One of these problems is overpopulation. Overpopulation is an undesirable condition where the number of existing human population exceeds the carrying capacity of earth. Instead of decreasing such problems, it tends to increase day after day due to many causes, and it is also threat the life of earth by many effects. Overpopulation is caused by many factors and cause many dangerous effects. Most of the causes of overpopulation are created by human being to get some of his needs. There are lot of overpopulation causes such as lack of family planning and medical facilities. First, lack of family planning is one of these causes. In some underdeveloped countries like Africa countries, people have no knowledge about family planning, and they marry their children at an early age, and this will produce more kids. Moreover, in some agricultural environment people consider child as a productive element by helping his parents in working, so they generate more children. Second, medical facilities is one of the causes that caused by technology. In the old time, people faced a lot of diseases, but nowadays scientists make many discoveries to defeat a whole range of diseases. One of these discoveries is the invention of vaccines which increase the life expectancy. Finally, people love life, so they seek to defeat all the obstacles, but they will hold the responsibility and consequences of overpopulation. These causes are some of a group of overpopulation causes. Lack of family planning is continuous, and spread in most of the countries, and also medical facilities are requirement, and it must spread to save many lives. Overpopulation become an international problem because its effects are harmful and dangerous for the people and for the earth. We mentioned that the effects of overpopulation are dangerous. Some of these effects are depletion of natural resources and social problems. First, depletion of natural resources is one of these effects. The resources of the earth are limited, and overpopulation consumes more of these resources such as water, trees and petroleum. In some cases, this effect will lead to anther which is war and conflict about natural resources. Second, there are many social problems caused by overpopulation. Overpopulation causes rise in unemployment because the occupation is limited while the number of people who want to employ is increasing. In addition, overpopulation will lead to high cost of living, and it raises the prices of various commodities including food, shelter, and healthcare. To conclude, these effects don’t affect only people, but they affect the earth and threat the human beings. Overpopulation isn’t a simple problem we can solve it whatever we want because the causes isn’t restricted to a group of people or one country, but it is international, and all the countries must unite to overcome this problem specially that its effects threat all the people wherever they are. Therefore, governments and organizations must find quickly a solution to start with it.

Mohamad Hussein:Love Your Life

Love Your Life Your mother loves you, so drive carefully and don’t lose her smile. Think about that and you won’t lose any precious thing in your life. Our societies are suffering from hundreds of problems even though the progress is reaching its peak. Car accidents are one of the most serious problems that we hear about nowadays. Obviously, this harmful disease has many causes and effects on our life in all its dimensions. The causes leading to car accidents are many and clear, and they are often related to the driver and his behavior. Speed driving is the major cause of these accidents where there are limits of speed drivers ignore. People always tend to achieve their works quickly and they like the speed in everything, so they consider that driving fast contributes to save time which is beneficial for them. However, this speed is dangerous in many other domains. In addition, drinking alcohol before or while driving is another cause of car accidents. Drinking alcohol causes lack of consciousness which is horrible during driving that needs concentration and conscious persons. Moreover, texting and driving is also a cause of car accidents. Today with “WhatsApp” that allows people to chat simultanely for hours and hours with low cost, the percentage of car accidents is increasing. Furthermore, bad roads are also considered a cause of car accidents. Bad roads are full of digs which sometimes defect of the equilibrium of the car. This defect is risky and causes accidents and fell of the car. Clearly, the statistics show that the percentage of car accidents caused by roads in the developed countries is less than that in the third world countries where the road are too bad and there are no studies of roads. The causes of car accidents are endless, and day after day they are becoming more serious. Car accidents increase with the time where the technology become more advanced and creates new factors that lead to them. In the 1800s, there were simple cars for one or two persons and modest speed. These kinds of cars are less dangerous prevent driving fast. However, today there are many kinds of cars with high speed .The speed of a normal car nowadays can reach 240 km/h which is a horrible speed and without fail causes accidents. Unfortunately, there are a lot of effects result from car accidents such as death, cars crash, wounded persons. Obviously, the death is the worst result of car accidents. The percentage of death results from such accidents increases with the increase of speed the driver reaches and the danger of crash. In addition, car crashes is another effect of car accidents which is a physical effect .Car accidents sometimes lead to complete destruction of the car which needs high costs to be repaired and sometimes it can’t be. Moreover, car accidents cause wounded whose wounds are sometimes serious. They don’t always cause temporal wounds, their effects can reach disabilities which are permanent effects and change completely the life. The effects of car accidents are dangerous and harmful, and it can reach the death meaning that they are a terrible problem. Last but not least, car accidents aren’t a small problem we can ignore and avoid, they are one of the most serious problems in the society that harm all people and everyone is threated by it. Therefore, we should be conscious and we should drive meticulously because there are a lot people we love and they need us alive.

Zaynab Rady:Poverty

The Impact of Poverty on Child’s social and Emotional Competence As Jeffrey D. Sachs said, “History is written by the rich, and so the poor get blamed for everything.” Poverty is considered a disaster that is dangerous not only for one person but also for the whole world. Not being able to provide fundamental needs such as nutrition, health care, education, clothes and shelter can lead to violence, corruption, crime, broken families, destruction of ecosystem, and poor governance. Poverty is one of the largest issues tackled in economics. Poor people suffer from famine, illness, malnutrition, unemployment, and depression. Not having enough money to purchase the things needed to sustain life, such as food, water and shelter, drives individuals to take drastic and dangerous measures to satisfy their basic human needs, such as begging or stealing, for instance. During the twenty-first century, half of people in the United States suffer from deep poverty because they earn less than 2$ of income by day. Poverty is a widespread phenomenon not only in South US but also in the North. Poverty menaces the lives of women, men, and children because it affects the entire society and not just a specific part of people. In addition, poverty influences individual and communal behaviors that elaborate to disturb all members of society. Poverty can lead children to start working at an early age due to their parents’ inability to provide them with their basic needs and a proper education. Therefore, they will be raised in abnormal manner and they will miss the protection and experience of a normal childhood. The United States comprises a high number of children who lives in abysmal poverty, this amount increased dramatically during the 1980s and continued high into the early 1990s.The percentage of children living in indigent families has been growing since about 1970s. In early childhood, children require health care, access of medical care, lack of freedom and a safe shelter to live in dignity and security. Some studies show that children get more affected by poverty than adults because they are still dependent on them as they are still growing and need guidance. They cannot sustain their needs by their own efforts since they are not independent and mature enough to do so. Kids also lack the power to face hindrances and understand bad circumstances; they suffer from deficiency of experiences and do not have the capability to overcome difficulties. As a result, children are easily affected by some the corrupt behaviors or actions including crime, violence or robbery, caused by lack of education and awareness. In addition, children are more exposed to malnutrition or the need of occupation by medical care or healthy foods, which makes them more likely to become the victims of diseases. There is a big debate that overlooks the transmission of this phenomenon in the society as a whole. Each case study concentrates on its central views or concepts. Some people argue that poverty and need lead to corruption and violence, whereas others argue that wealth and power can cause corruption due to exploitation. The first case study looks on the sexual behaviors of children, especially girls that are poor, such that they rely on many relationships with men in order to get easy money. These girls try to exploit their bodies to treat another issue which is poverty, thus creating another horrible one. They sell their bodies and ethics for money. Furthermore, some children depend on bribery or robbery to gain some bread, or they will be obliged in such acts to do greater crimes, such as murder and violence. In addition, some children are thrown in the streets to vend stuff or to hone expensive materials. Being thrown on the streets to beg leads children to do actions which are not honest or good to provide for themselves and their parents. Sometimes, they are obliged to do that under a strong authority or pressure from rich people because they don’t have the power to protect themselves. They are dependent on adults to take care of them. All of these unacceptable actions are caused by the inability of the government to ensure the peace and the security. It is unethical to deprive poor people of their rights which should be divided equally between all humans. The low income that poor people earn is not sufficient to fulfill family needs. On a different note, luxury drives rich people to live in comfort and pleasure. According to Durkheim, French social theorist, in his Suicide: A Study in Sociology, luxury is “too great comfort which turns a man against himself.” This explains that luxury is always related to injustice and discrimination. He explains that rich people have enough time and money to do a lot of sinful deeds; they do not have time to care for religion or to be faithful. In contrast, poverty prevents children to be corrupt because they don’t have enough money leading to bad behaviors .They consider that poverty prevents child to think about those attitudes and luxury is the main cause of corruption. If we have a lot of money, we can do what we want due to having time and options to do unethical comportments. Moreover, poor children cannot do everything they hope since they are limited to provide their needs. Depression is a large problem that inhibits indigent children to have such bad behavior, the lack of many necessities deprives a child to think unnecessary things to complete his or her life because people look primarily for the most basic needs. After that, they will look for the secondary ones. On the other hand, some rich children can depend on crimes to get money or they will be violent because of their greediness. They can be narcissistic, greedy, or envious. Even though they are able to satisfy all their basic needs, they keep wanting more because they’re no longer satisfied with what they have. In reality, humans should be aware whether they are rich or poor because social class does not determine ethical principles. However, faith is a unique concept that can decide which direction to follow. Money should not be the basis that controls our lives. No country is immune from corruption. Each one has the possibility to do corrupt things; money is not the final cause or determinant. In conclusion, Aristotle said, “Poverty is the parent of revolution and crime.” Corruption resembles a scary evil that injuries sensible people’s hearts. Corruption is considered a key reason for poverty and it goes beyond a bribe paid or money stolen. In sum, we must have the will to end corruption by ending its major origin: poverty which exacerbates corruption.

Omar Tantawi:Appalling Act !

Appalling Act ! Introduction: Violence is a bloodthirsty monster. This monster destroys every dream, every hope. Violence causes wars, discords. Violence is the knife that injures people. These injuries are extremely painful and harmful. According to a recent study, 100% of people agreed that violence exist. When someone talks about violence, most of people think that we are going to talk about physical violence. Unfortunately, they are wrong; there are diverse kinds of violence such as physical, psychological, verbal violence. All of them pour in the sufferers of humanity. Although there are huge amount of violent people, still people such as Mahatma Gandhi who have been fighting against violence and violent people. For instance, Mahatma Gandhi said,” Non-violence, which is the quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain. Nelson Mandela” I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man.” Although there is numerous people think that sometimes violence is considered as a good solution, however violence cannot be a solution because it has several dangerous effects. First argument: Effects of physical violence Physical violence is the most common type of violence in our daily life. According to a study made on college student, 20% considered violence as a common act. In some cases, physical violence causes death. An unforgettable thing happened in my town. There was a child called Khaled, who has an evil behavior. As usually, his father harmfully hit him for every silly mistake he does. On September 2001, this was his last round in this disgusting act. His father unconsciously was hitting him, therefore Khaled passed away. Why he passed away? Doctors say that he passed away due to a force strike on his spine. Nowadays, Khaled’s father regretfully says,” is it believable? I killed my own beloved son!” In addition, physical violence causes indelible health illnesses. For example,” the story of Tina Nash, whose eyes were, gouged out by her violent boyfriend in a sickening attack, shocked the nation. Now Mum-of-two Tina, 32, has relived her ordeal at the hands of monster Shane Jenkin, 33, who attacked her as she slept at her home in Hayle, Cornwall, in April last year”. Moreover, this gruesome type of violence renders the destruction of many countries. For example, Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombs which is considered as a type of physical violence. In such a way, one can figure out how much physical violence is close to each person, and how much this form of violence has disastrous effects. Finally, violence does not attack people only physically, but also it has psychological impacts. Second argument: effects of psychological violence Psychological violence is the cancer that invades the soul to reflect various egregious effects. This type of violence prongs his victims without any alarm. For one thing, psychological violence affects the social life. For example,” a brain scan study pinpoints the changes associated with child abuse that may raise people's risk of depression, PTSD and addictions later in life.” Moreover, psychological violence leads to increase the risk to make silly mistakes. From my own experience, if I am feeling depressed, I cannot work well in the exam. Seriously, when my friends were mocking on me, I was not able to concentrate or at least focus in my exam. Therefore, I failed my test. Moreover, psychological violence affects person’s behaviors. For instance, many times we do not understand why that guy did that act or why that guy has cursed someone ,and he do not have valid reason? Be sure this act or acts are the results of a previous psychological abuse. As a conclusion, psychological violence affects everyone even in home as a recent study suggested that 64% of people agree that violence is most common at home. However, some people believe that violence has some advantages. Counter argument: violence is the only solution against violent people. Violence is the only way to deal with violent people. This is what violence supporters say following their argument by the example of terrorism. However, looking deeply in the history, violence was not a solution for any problem. In Iraq, there was a violent president; he practiced countless types of violence on his nation. Therefore, the US invaded this country aiming to stop violence. Indeed, the US used violence against violence and the result is more violence. Today, terrorism widely exists in Iraq. Another example is in Syria, in which the president is using violence against violence. Solving violence by violence is unwise. In fact, in Syria, each day come accompanied with hundreds of death in people, therefore loss of millions of dollars is the solution against violent people! Violence can never be solved by violence. The only solution is to fight against violence using peaceful strategies. For example, India liberated from Britain governs without using violence due to Mahatma Gandhi believes against violence. To sum up, violence always cannot be the solution against violent persons, and the humanity should wisely fight against violence. Conclusion: Overall, violence has hundreds, or millions of deleterious effects must wisely be solved. Physical and psychological violence are two faces of one criminal called violence. Usually, dangerous criminals should be treated carefully, because they are extremely perilous. In such a way, we should defend ourselves against violence by keeping in mind that any unwise act can has unfavorable effects. Although violent people are countless, violence will disappear one day.

Jinane Jouni :Cry Today and Laugh Tomorrow

Cry Today and Laugh Tomorrow H.G.Wells said once, “The crisis of yesterday is the joke of tomorrow.” Life is full of obstacles and complications that give life its sense and significance. Life is plenty of difficulties and problems that imply a lesson to learn at the end. Thus, we should always be aware of the anything able to alert our routine. We all have faced some problems, whether they are huge or not, to a degree we forget or we overcome them. However, their influence is still engraved in our memories just like the hole that a nail engraved in a fresh wall. When I glance over my wall, I see holes disseminated: some of them are prominent and remarkable and the others are invisible and inconspicuous. I twiddle one hole with my fingertips. I can’t sleep off this hole, it is carved in stone as other memories. When meditating it more, my mind starts traveling in the world of past, back to the day when I was in Grade 5. What I remember is that I was already sad that day, because it was raining and the gray clouds were covering the blue sky and blocking the warm sun. Rain drops hit my head and looked like tears falling from the sky, to end by wetting my whole body. Fresh air prowled around my body and thunders enlightened my path. It was dark and the smell of damp earth went into my nose. This rainy day was not my auspicious: it usually makes me feel pessimistic, grouchy and solitary. This wasn’t only the responsible reason for being depressed that day. The ostensible reason turned out to have a low grade in Math. I was feeling shame of myself and from my abilities. I even wouldn’t discuss that grade with myself; I didn’t want to know what my weaknesses were and how to solve them. In addition, I was timidly afraid to share it with my classmates. I was also shy and diffident when I came back home and welcomed by the friendly gate. This was a huge problem for me: I got a low grade in Math! I couldn’t sleep a wink that night! Now recollecting this memory, I just laugh. I’m really surprised how I could be in that sadness and wretchedness. However, is that because I grow up and become more conscious, or just because I’ve been facing more significant problems in my life that makes me more strong and cognizant? I think that days softened this “severe” problems to make it look “ridiculous.” This memory is a joke that makes me mock and taunt of myself. At the end, I think that crisis was so simple and unnecessarily to make a fuss about. Other holes in the wall might not be this ridiculousness, but they become also a witticism to laugh on. Days will pass and problems have two paths: they might be solved someday or they will just fade away. However, what I must keep in mind is that I have to stop worrying and enjoy my life.

Affectionate Love

Affectionate Love The 14th of February is coming near, and everybody is wondering about the gift he will choose to express love and appreciate. Love is the biggest engine of this event, and we have to keep it in heart because it has many positive impressions on our lives. “Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.” The love is indescribable emotion that caught in our heart toward someone else. Love is like energy; we can’t see it, touch it or smell it. However, we can feel its effect: warm and fire. Who didn’t love someone in his life? None of us did. We all love our parents, friends, and family. Nevertheless, we only be passionate with a person, when our hearts become drums beating on a loud melody. My heart also beats the same song when I fell in love with a guy. He gives strength to face the hindrances I encounter on any pathway. Moreover, he gives me courage and confident to say what I think, to express my feelings and to overcome any wicked situation. I always trust him because he will do the best for me. He always protects me to stay by his side. He respects my decisions, and he guides me on the right way. I never thought I will fall in love, someday, with such person. We’ve been along for two years. I’ve discovered that love is adoration and passion. It is a strong emotion that convince anyone that he/she cannot live without the partner; which is the other half soul. Love is knowing the other’s weaknesses and accepting him/her whatever they are. Love is patient, kind, and it doesn’t have envy and evils. It is a purified feeling, where all the sins and vices are blocked by the filter. This is the real love, because real love is not based on romance, candle light dinner and walks along the beach. In fact, it is based on respect, compromise, care and trust.

Jinane Jouni :Impossible, But...

Impossible, But... We all heard about French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his victories. He was wiser and he inspirited me by the maxim he said,” Impossible is a word to be founded only in the dictionary of fools.” We all say “it is impossible” when facing something difficult or needs an effort. I also used to belong to those people who repeat that expression, yet not anymore. I lived many situations that made me feel confused. They tempted me to surrender and quit. “It seems impossible, I can’t do it.” I didn’t even give myself a chance to try. I lost many experiences because of that foolish thinking. However, I decided to change and be more courageous. I want to be brave and try at least. I can’t judge if something is impossible if I didn’t try. I wasn’t sure I could be able to learn English someday, but now I can. I work hard; I read stories and studied a lot. I said it is impossible to be in AUB, but here I am learning in it. If I only stand and complain, I would be now in another university. It was impossible to go back with my old friends, but I went see her because I did that. I went see her and I made my destiny. It was impossible for me to forget my boyfriend and move on. It wasn’t possible to jump from high places, but I made a rappel. Many people have said it was impossible and they lost their only chance. However, other people have believed in their strength and their capabilities, and they made it. It was impossible to fly in the air, to speak with someone 5,000 miles away, to see what’s happening in other countries, to discover the universe, to step on Moon, electricity and light bulb were imaginary, but they broke the limits and they turn it into possible. Foolish people will stand apart and watch, repeating “it is impossible.” While we have to convey ourselves that any person has a strong determination then nothing is impossible for him. The impossible is only the failure when trying to accomplish something, and that will be a challenge for others.

Jinane Jouni :Goodbye but Welcome

Goodbye but Welcome Have you ever felt that this is the end of the world, and you're not going to be glad anymore due to an abruptly change in life? Actually I felt that, but Tupac Shakur said once, “for every dark night there is a brighter day." My grandfather passed away on New Year eve, the evening we supposed to be celebrating. He was in hospital for few days before, but that night his health was excellent as the doctor said. However, his sudden death shocked all of us. We weren't expecting that. I didn't accept that incident at the beginning. It didn't seem true for me. It was like a joke. I believed that it was a dream. And I’ll wake in few moments to find everything OK. Unfortunately, it wasn't a nightmare. It was the cruel world. It takes what we love and what we want. We can't live content forever. Something should happen to stop the routine. I felt depressed and melancholic. I didn’t want to talk with anybody else. I putted myself in my room and I cried an ocean of tears. I cried my eyes out. I was down in the dumps. I was getting back all memories we had together, since I was born. I remembered all happy moments we shared together, all places we visit, and all gifts he bought to me. He was shrewd and wise. He thought me how to face life. He was the most influential person in my life. His lap was the only secure place when my parents made me mad. I used to watch some movies with him, sitting on big chair. We played in ball on the backyard, with my other cousins. My grandpa was warm and loving. As such I wasn’t able to overcome his death. It was like the end for me. Everything looks is black. One month later, everything came back to its balance. The world should continue. My grandpa will not be content if I am sad, so I shall smile. My grandpa will be proud of me if I’ll successes. He intends me to know he is in a safe place, and I pray for him. All the memories, I should treasure and keep them close to my heart. When our Lord calls us, we have to go. We shouldn’t stop when something happens, we have to move on. Life is just a game, an exam to check our patience and strength. Life isn’t easy as my grandpa taught me. But whatever happened, things will go better. Whatever the night gets along, the sun will rise again in the morning to send its sunbeam and warms the Earth.

Jinane Jouni :My Appealing Sanctuary

My Appealing Sanctuary Oliver Holmes said once, “Where we love is home – home that our feet may leave, but not our heart.” Life is built in a tapestry of relationships. Lovers, strangers, friends and family weave this tapestry and make it full of life and colors. We can’t live loner and solitude, we have relationships include: the schools we go, the streets we walk and of course the home we stay in. one of the most relationships that I ever shared is with my home. My home is not only made of stone and surrounded by wet green grass. It is the place where I was born, raised and live. My home is the only refugee: I can hide from all the world dangers. The warm my home offers is not restricted or limited, its warm exists for me. My home is the treasure where I keep all my memories. There, I played with my brother and sisters and had an unforgettable time. However, there is something I like the most in my home: it is my personal room. The emotions cascaded with deep love, fascination, unanswered questions, anger and lifelong lessons. It is a couple of months I left my room and small town for the big life city. I thought that I left my home, but I left myself back, locked in that room. My room is my miniature world, it is decorated with beautiful and joyful colors that calms me down. The walls are painted in clear pink that reflects my feminine personality. In addition, adorable stickers are attached on the wall to make it looks lively and fresh: some butterflies flying, some birds singing and some stars shining. When I look to this wall, it brings me to life again. Whenever I feel angry and anxious, the smile draws over my face and the soul comes back to its natural situation. What I also like the most in my favorite place at home, which is my lovable room, is the ceiling. The ceiling is my sky; I put some stars, planets and moons made of plastic on the ceiling. They sparkle at night when the lights are off. I look to this sky and it makes me dream and travel to a remote world; the world where there are no obstacles and hindrances. Sitting or sleeping in my bed, I lift my head, gaze at these stars just like if they are real stars outside in the sky, and sending their light rays to my eyes. My room is a long and warm hug with someone I love. It is the place where I am happy, enchanted and comfortable. I’m attached to it like a kid who is attached to his mother. I take care of it like a mother cat takes care of its little kittens. My room is where I make mistakes and make fun. It is when I do everything private to me: sing and dance. It is where I study hard for my exams. Moreover, my room is like the big box where I dig everything inside. Where I left my room, I felt melancholic and depressed. I felt loneliness deep down in my heart. I didn’t feel comfy and restful in my new room at AUB dorms. I misses the rich bookshelves, the flying butterflies and the dreaming sky. Everything was strange to me and unusual to my old habits. However, when I came back to it during the weekend, I felt like a fresh soul implanted inside my body and activeness was its core. At the end, we can’t keep holding onto things that are now distant dreams. Every weekend, when I sit in my room, I feel the relation between my room and I is getting stronger and hard to break. It is magic: My room is a magician, and I don’t know its tricks. Whenever someone travels abroad, he can see fascinating and fancy places. He can feel happy and entertained, but he will not feel the tenderness that his home – and the favorite place at home – gives. The home is where love and heart are. Briefly, “HOME” is Happiness and Heart, Own shelter, Memories and Ending place to visit.

Jinan Jouni:Unexpected Death

Unexpected Death The sight of ambulance and police cars racing to the site of explosion turns passengers into idle curiosity. Another ground-breaking explosion hit the headlines of the newspaper and magazines. This isn’t a bomb explosion or gas station, but it is an original explosion in number of car accident. Although human beings have invented the vehicles to save long distance and time, but the traumatic accidents are one of their residues. Each year, the number of car accidents are increasing insanely rather than decreasing due to some laws and driving rules. Despite all the convenience of vehicles, car accidents have several reasons and lead to countless impacts on human beings. Many people find their death when they drive, or others drive, in high speed. First of all, people who are late or in a hurry try to exceed the maximum speed on the road to reach their destination in less time. As a result, when passing on the road, crossing the street, or even resting in the private cars, the hurried driver may attack you. Secondly, some teenagers and youths intent to go beyond the speed-limit as an act of adventure, fun or show-off. They race and compete on the highways especially during mid-nights, what expose them to severe accidents affecting their health. Thirdly, some people find cars as an activity that brings rest to soul and help get rid of some stress and emotions. Many people who face stress during their works or find inability in expressing their negative emotion. Attempting to remove these burdens, they drive cars in sky-scraping speed without thinking. Not only high speed driving kills the drivers, but also exposes pedestrians or passengers to live the same accident. It must be admitted that most car accidents on the road result from a lack of conscious of the driver himself at the wheel. Drunk drivers are the most drivers exposed to car accident because of the blindness and illusion of images they can see. Drink increases foolhardiness and slow reaction what prevents the driver from seeing clearly. In addition, traffic crashes form the outcome of inexperience or lack of “road sense”. Poorly trained drivers don’t know how to drive properly and control their speed. Consequently, many people who scrape through their driving test gain their experience at the expense of others. Furthermore, the new trend of texting and calling during driving evolves the car accidents. Since the driving is a task that requires the driver’s full attention, people who perform another task while driving lead to distract their focus and limit their abilities. For example, in Lebanon, most of the drivers – if not all – chat on Whatsapp and check their Facebook account on the red light and the green one also. This obsession of socializing delude the consciousness and prevents is presence. Many fine and penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol are very stringent indeed but not applicable on using cell phones. Actually, drivers are not always blamed for car crashes; outer stimulus cause the increase of numbers annually. At the beginning, pedestrians, passengers or other drivers lead to the distraction and puzzle of a certain driver. For instance, an old person whose ability to see, hear and walk properly, or a child playing in his ball on the road may be detective for the driver who have to disobey the rules and stop for him. Another inexpert driver, who overpasses the red light, obliges another track to stop and sometimes to crush. Moreover, the roads themselves present hazards. The sharp bend with a reverse camber can easily send a vehicle off the road. Sudden rain, ice patches, unexpected fog cause innumerable accidents every year especially during winter. Not only the weather, but also the narrow roads, badly paved roads greatly increase hazards of the driver. Additionally, a proportion of these calamities can be blamed on the vehicle itself and therefore the driver cannot control the wheel. Vehicle defects result from careless maintenance and the stubbornness of paying the repairs expenses. For instance, defective tires, ruined lights and broken brakes put the car out of control. For that reason, car maintenance should be taken seriously and weather equipment should always be ready in the truck in case of emergency. In conclusion, car accidents on the road have limitless reasons beginning with high-speed for the purpose of enjoyment, time-save or emotion liquidation. The car crashes are the product of lack of focusing of drivers due to drinking, phone using, and unworthy license. External motivations are also responsible for the death of many people. Car accidents have killed millions of drivers and individuals since its devising. Statistics is unable to count the number of injured and paralyzed people who lost their lives and future due to their rashness when driving. Although many societies are working for decreasing these numbers by increasing the awareness and holding conferences, their efforts are still kind of humble. Governments are cooperating with societies and clubs by imposing fines and levies but there are not able to curb the elevation. Some people say that an accident is fateful; however some cautiousness and carefulness may be effective sometimes.

Jinan Jouni :Please Save Me!

Please Save Me! The shouts and shrieks fill the injured streets and the slogans occupy the first pages of newspapers claiming for innovating a solution and saving the country. Lebanon is bleeding from the injuries the politician and the public have scratched. It is sinking in a sea of blood and needs a fleet to pull it to the surface and remedy it. The life in Lebanon has become a peril that threaten the inhabitants and the tourists. Throughout many decades, Lebanon is living in insecure and dangerous situation that refers to plentiful causes and that affects the Lebanese life as entire. Since the civil war of 1975, Lebanon is sorrowing from the act of fanaticism and sectarianism that pervades the heart of the inhabitants and implants the malice in their intentions. Because Lebanon is composed of more than 18 distinct sects from different religions, living on the same land may produce conflicts among these residents. It is ordinary to have contradiction between people who doesn’t resemble in anything, and refuse to deal on something .The idea of sectarianism took shape when the parties started appearing and became active and dynamic. As a result, people of the same religion, then from the same sect, joined the party it symbolized them as minorities and act like the other side is a foe. Moreover, the sectarianism for a particular sect and fanaticism for a specific idea, without accepting the other’s proposals and discussion, were a flame of a civil war in 1975. Although this war has ended nominally, it is coldly ongoing and only needs someone to feed it some gasoline. The bigotry and bias toward something rather than accepting the other’s differences is leading Lebanon to fall in abyss. The tens unforeseen explosions and bombs in the last few years were and still a major reason for the anxious state of Lebanon. Lebanon has subsisted many murdering and assassination attempts for famous politicians and journalists. Consequently, beginning in 1975 till 2005, when Rafiq El-Hariri was assassinated, the series of attempted murder never finishes. Furthermore, the Syrian war and the power vacuum in Lebanon embolden for terrorists to diffuse profusely and perform all their unmerciful acts. Thus, several explosions in different regions of Lebanon resulted the death of twenties of innocent people who passed by that road by chance or they were fated to live there. Besides, the lack of effective decisions taken by the politicians, especially by the ministry of internal affairs and security, has propelled these explosions to take place weekly. Therefore, nothing has the ability to stop the terrorism movement in Lebanon and none has decided to take a firm resolution. The consecutive and frequent explosions budge the stable and earlier secure situation in Lebanon. The miserable life Lebanese inhabitants are living is a momentous factor of classifying Lebanon into the category of insecure countries. Lebanese people are suffering from the joblessness and lack of equal opportunities among the workers and students. Accordingly, the bribery and nepotism is their only solution to get an earnest job. Students aren’t finding a suitable job after graduation and, if they do, it is based on a strong relation with a powerful person. In addition, the dramatic boost of living cost is complicating Lebanese’s life and make it harder to adapt with a new situation. Lebanese are working days and nights to pay for taxes, rent and house expenses. To exemplify the picture, most of goods have increased more than 50%, and the fuel is at the top of this list. Due to the absence of subsidizing and the fluctuation of the government, Lebanese are struggling to stay alive. Thousands of people have found the immigration as a permanent solution, others are entrenched in their home. Lebanon is concerned as unsafe and unsecure country to dwell in or to visit since its inhabitants are always living in an endless war ignited by the envy and the extremism they carry in their hearts. Some Lebanese are non-biased but the “trendy” explosions oblige them to live the instable situation. Lebanese people are screaming and asking the world to find a solution for this elongated and disastrous circumstances they were living many years ago. However, every person is seeking for his/her own benefit and ignoring the future of their country. These selfishness, lack of integrity, and surrender for other external countries without being objective and humanist are responsible for the insecurity in Lebanon. Lebanon is losing its name on the honor list of top countries in Middle East. It is also losing its attractive qualities, annual tourists and lovable children. If all the Lebanese concert and cooperate as “all for one”, they will be able to save their country from the dismal status in order to improve their life and their sons’ future.

Remy Rhayam:Sincerely, a Bad Day

Sincerely, a Bad Day I had never been more nervous, lost and worried in my life. I had just spent a few hours to go to the airport, so I could travel home after spending four unforgettable days in Marseille. However, those days had a bad end, and I will never forget what happened with me. I traveled with my cousin from Lebanon to Marseille. But he had been obliged to come back before me. Thus, I stayed alone in a country where I didn’t know anyone, and I should travel from Marseille to Lebanon alone. That was my first experience at the airport where no one was with me and nothing was accustomed to me. I didn’t know from where I should go and begin in order to get the plane. A situation of dread and horror covered me because I didn’t want to be late; I want to back in no time. At the beginning I decided to depend on myself and do everything alone without any help; I wanted to prove that I can adapt with all situations even if they were very hard, but I didn’t succeed because the airport was very huge and complicated. At that time, I tried to ask a woman for help, but she didn’t understand anything because she knew neither Arabic nor French. That was terrible! I stood up in the middle of the pathway where people went back and forth, and I asked myself hesitantly and fearfully what will happen now; what I should do. I brought my bag, and I followed a small group of people. We finally got the elevator; they entered, but there was not enough space for me. What a Bad luck I have! I started again to panic after having a small hope that my problem might have been solved. Therefore, I decided to wait another elevator. I got another one, and I pressed the button 4 because the last group chose it. The elevator climbed it up to the fourth floor. Then it stopped the doors opened, and I looked fearfully. I had been shocked because the lobby was empty like a desert. At that moment, my tears formed in my eyes; I was afraid to miss my airplane. Moreover, bad ideas came into my head. I wanted to see my family and my friends because I felt that I would not see them again. All I wanted was to return back home safely. Suddenly, an airport employee saw me, and directly he helped me after telling him my problem. He took me to the right place. Thus, when I turned to thank him, he was gone. I hope that I can see him another time to thank him a lot for his good behavior. In addition, I hope that one day I can help another traveler who has troubles like me. Finally, I come back home safely after spending an unforgettable day full of adventures.

Remy Rhayam:Precious Gift from God

Precious Gift from God Isadora Duncan once said: “With what price we pay for the glory of motherhood”. I think that the glory of motherhood can’t be limited and estimated by all money of the world because it’s sacred and so valuable. Maternity is the dream of every girl and woman. Being a mother is a dream for all women, and it is from their missions in their lives that aspire to accomplish. Each woman loves to have children and sense the feeling of being responsible of a soul who grows inside her. She feels all his movement. When she gives birth to her first child and sees him for the first time, she directly can’t imagine her life without him. This new born is a part of her soul, and she protects him from anything that will hurt. She sacrifices her life for him. When he grows up, she helps him in his studies. After that, she makes him aware of the bad friends and dangerous things that may attack him. For example, for me my mother is the best one in the world. She is my model role and my source of inspiration. She has the best smile; she doesn’t sleep all the night if I face troubles. In addition, she is not only my mother; she is my best friend to whom I tell all my secrets. She gives me the best directions. She loves me for no reason. I don’t forget that day when I have had a problem at school with some friends. I told her the problem, and she gave me the best solution and what I shall do to overcome this problem. I have done what she has told me and the problem was solved. I don’t know what I shall do to make her feel happy because I don’t like seeing her sad. May god bless my mother and all mothers around the world because I can’t imagine my life without her. Finally, it’s said, “God cannot be everywhere, so he invited mothers”. Thus, I asked God to don’t deprive me from being a mother because it is the best thing that a woman can do in her life.

Remy Rhayam:Amazing and Memorable Day

Amazing and Memorable Day Who can forget one of his/her best days? I am sure that no one can forget because the best moments cannot be forgotten; they will accompany the person till the end of his/her life. They will be all what he/she has at the end of his/her life. I have many amazing and memorable days when I have spent best moments with my family and my friends. One of these days is the day of my promotion in grade twelve (last year). It had been a special day for me because I will finish the hardest period of my life. This past period had been similar; in general, there were nothing new because I have been in the same town, learned in public schools and done same things every afternoon. However, at that day I will close that door and I will open another one where a beautiful life and charming future is waiting for me. I will discover many new things in my personality, and I will change many tasks in my life. The morning of the 1st of June 2013 was very special, I got up full of energy and enthusiasm like I can do everything that people asked me to do. I went to the hair dresser and makeup artist shops with my friends in order to prepare ourselves for this big day. After spending three hours at these shops, we went to our houses to relax and be ready to the expected moment. At 5 o’clock I finished all my preparations, and I went to the school where some of my classmates and friends were waiting. Then, the guests and the parents began to come. At 6 o’clock, the organizer of the ceremony came and told us that we must go down because the ceremony will begin. At that moment, I felt that my heart will stop from the happiness. We went down and sat on our chairs, and the ceremony began. The director and other people said their speeches, and then we got our certificates and souvenirs. Finally, we threw our hats high on “Congratulation” song. Later, we went to the restaurant to celebrate our special day. We danced and sung till the morning. Next, everyone went to his/her home retaining many gorgeous memories. Eventually, all what we can preserve are the memories and the good character. The money will leave, and they are nothing; they are only papers and sometimes a way to be happy by buying funny objects, but they aren’t the source of happiness for people. Therefore, people should enjoy every single moment in their lives even if they are hard in the present, but people will laugh when they remember them in the future.

Remy Rhayam:Knowing Nothing

Knowing Nothing Socrates said, “To know, is to know that you know nothing. That is the meaning of true knowledge.” This quote is very meaningful because it brings us to reality. People can’t know everything in this world. They only know little things, and sometimes they may understand wrongly. In other words, people think that they know everything about something, but in reality they have little ideas about that. Last Saturday, I went to Blom Bank headquarter in Verdun. When I arrived I had been fascinated by the beauty and the immensity of the apartment. The entire building was glassy and composed by many floors. We went into the room where the presentation had taken place. A classy woman who is a member in “Blom Shabeb” came into the room and begun to give us general information about the Lebanese Banking System. First, she told us the difference between a credit card and debit card. Second, she continued to talk about kinds of accounts, bank secrecy, loans and interest. When she had finished her presentation, I discovered that I had wrong knowledge about some issues related to the Bank’s work. It was a great experience to know how banks work and to have some knowledge when I want to open an account at a bank. Furthermore, it was very beneficial for me because my future major will be business and especially Finance, so maybe I will work in a bank when I will graduate. In conclusion, we should know an important thing in this life that we cannot know every single detail about everything because life is changeable. Thus, we have some information about something, and we ignore others.

Remy Rhayam:The Lady of the Waterfall

The Lady of the Waterfall It’s said, “A village is a hive of grass where nothing unobserved can pass”. There is no place better than a village to live in. Jezzine is my native village where I have grown, and I have spent beautiful days with family and friends. It’s the best place where I feel comfortable away from pollution and fuss of Beirut. It’s the heaven on the earth for its people where they find peace, joy, comfort and beauty of its nature. Sunrise and Sunset are special moments in Jezzine. The sun wakes up early in the morning with its golden rays to notify people that a new day begins. Its old houses and cafes keep in mind of people the old days and nights when they have met and have spent unforgettable time together. This village is recognized by its waterfall which is the tallest one in Lebanon and the Middle East, so it’s called “The Lady of the Waterfall”. In addition, Jezzine is famous by the cutlery. There are many old men who still manufacture copper knives, swords, spoons and forks. These craftsmen don’t accept to leave this career because they find it like gold and indispensable wealth. Their crafts are presented to many presidents around the world because they are so precious gifts that are not found everywhere, and they are made with high degree of precision and care. Moreover, the visitors will be satisfied because there are many natural sites to discover where they can find the comfort with the sound of birds. For example, when I feel stressed, I go hiking on nature where I feel relaxed and I forget all my problems and worries. Forests are surrounded by very huge Pine trees where the birds find a good place to build their nests. Second, Jezzine’s mountains are like paintings by reason of each one has a special form. Furthermore, Jezzine contains a lot of restaurants that each one has his own view. They deliver delicious foods that are special for Jezzine. In summer nights, the weather is fantastic. I can go out with friends or with family and contemplate this wonderful town by night. It’s very crowded and especially in the festivals that take place in August every year. These festivals are very famous and known in Lebanon. Young, adults and elderly people come from everywhere to celebrate and see the magnificence of these carnivals. Finally, living in a village is really a priceless wealth. I have discovered that since I come to Beirut to go into the university. Bluntly, I wait impatiently the weekend to return to my village to sit near the window and contemplate the dazzling stars in the sky.

Indoor or Outdoor Job

Indoor or Outdoor Job After more than fifteen years at school and university, learning and practicing have to give the fruitful result. Working is the final step of a ladder to climb. Working aims to gain money in order to survive and live suitably. Work helps being independent financially and socially. Work can take different forms and can be performed in different locations. A secretary may work in an office; a domestic may work at home. The preferable location has a role in influencing on the worker productivity. Thus, some people prefer to work in an office while others prefer to stick at home. Therefore, working at home is much comfortable and easier. Staying at home and performing job is a good solution for married couple especially women. Firsts of all, they can practice many tasks at the same time, while if they work in an office, they have to wait the time they come back home. For example, a woman can look for her family, take care of children and work on the laptop at the same time. Moreover, the couple can save money by working at home. They can save the money spent on daily transportation and formal clothes needed for work. As a result, they can exploit this amount in some activities. In addition, the couple or the individual is not obliged to hire a domestic worker and a many to do the household chose. The person is doing all the chose when he/she is at home. Thus, the woman can be more comfortable in dealing with family and duties. The job performed at home sounds more comfortable and desirable for people. At the beginning, some people have no ability to work in early morning or during afternoon. They prefer to work at the time they want and they can manage their time. For instance, my friend likes to sleep in the morning and get up late. Working in an office prevents her from sleeping, so her bad mood due to her lack of sleep may influence her work. In addition, by working at home, the person can start working when he feels he is ready. If the person is angry, he can go out for a short time to relax, and then he comes back and continues working. Additionally, no boss is supervising the employee if he works at home. The person has to submit what he has to do in special time, and he will do that without the supervision of the boss. The employee will feel free and this reflects on his job. Working at home is easier, and it contributes to a fruitful result. Some people suggest that working out can be more beneficial for social life. They say that the worker can make lot of friendship with his colleagues. He can go out instead of working in the same place he sleeps in. However, the person can have friends and social circles in his surroundings. He/she is not obliged to have a work to make friends, but he/she can visit them and take his job with him/her. He can go out at whenever he wants and complete his work when he comes back. Additionally, when s/he finishes the jobs: he/she doesn’t come back home exhausted as people who works in office. People who work in office reach their home and need to sleep; they go out only during weekends. Working in office changes one’s personality and lifestyle. Eventually, working at home is more comfortable for those who have family and need to take care of it. It is also beneficial for those who have a special lifestyle that doesn’t suit with conventional jobs. Nevertheless, working outside or inside home doesn’t indicate the social status or life of someone. However, it is a way chosen by a group of people who likes to work freely and as it wants. As a result, it doesn’t matter if the job is done at home or outside of it, what is important is its quality.

Remy Rhayem:Go on…

Go on… Robert Frost said, “In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on.” Life is too short, and it doesn’t stop for any purpose except the death. When people lose a beloved person, they think that life stop there, and they cannot live and adapt anymore with the current situation. Besides death, when bad things happen with someone, he/she will give up and look at life from a pessimistic way. I am one of these people; when something bad happens with me, I become pessimistic and I lose hope, but after attending “Life Skills Workshop”, I have changed my behaviors. I am always looking for the good things (the filled part from a cup of glass), and when something bad happen with me, I ask myself, “what is the good thing behind it?” Thus, we should always think about its great side, its bright side, and its funny side. I benefited a lot from that training. First, I knew “The two golden rules of dialogue”. These rules will make the dialogue more effective and beneficial. In addition, we learned the three level of education: knowledge (know), skills (know how) and attitude (know how to be). A major problem in today’s schools and universities is that they focus on the knowledge and skills and ignore the attitude. Consequently, the trainers aimed to focus on the attitude. In order to work on the attitude, a person should first understand himself, and then he/she should try to be happy, optimistic, and grateful. This looked strange at the beginning, but when I finished this training, I did understand, and I was convinced with this point of view. Furthermore, laughing is very important for health because it gets away the stress. Another information that chocked me was the necessity of living like a child; this includes expressing the feelings freely, playing like kids and being serious and focusing on the work that we have to achieve. In conclusion, although life is short, it very complicated and hard in some situations. However, the person should be strong and afford everything because life doesn’t wait anyone; it goes on.

Remy Rhayem:Friends

Friends Leo Buscaglia said, “A single rose can be my garden... a single friend, my world.” Friendship is the purest and the most honest feeling ever. It is one of the feelings that a person cannot live without. People’s life cannot be completed unless having friends in their lives. As I believe, no one can live without, at least, one friend who can trust and tell him his/her secrets. Friends can become the world of someone; they can be his/her parents and siblings. They live everything together; they share sad, lovely, happy and joyful moments. They help and stay beside each other in all situations, and they scarify for each other. They can be one soul in two bodies. In addition, the confidence is the basis of their relation. They should trust each other and swear to don’t hurt the other person. According to my short experience in my life that is full of practices with many people, I find that some of my friends are my only supporters after my family members. When I got the scholarship at AUB, my true friends called me and said congratulation for me. After, they arranged to me a small surprising party. We spent a memorable night that it will be one of my favorite memories. They were really funny, optimistic and the important thing is that they love me sincerely. We laughed, told jokes to each other and remembered our old days at school. We remembered everything in details, the when we laughed and when we cried; when we had some small troubles and misunderstanding. That night was like retrieval for the good past. There are more situations where I feel that there are many honest people who hope everything good and beneficial for me. They help me when I have troubles and problems, and sincerely I appreciate what they are doing. Finally, having true and honest friends beside me help me a lot to develop my character. In addition, one real and truthful friend is better than having millions of bad and treacherous friends who are selfishness and don’t love you to succeed in life.

Remy Rhayem:Building the Character

Building the Character Henry Ford said, “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” Working and participating in team sports is a virtuous experience that no one participates in and regrets after. It has a lot of benefits on people and the society as well. It leads to develop someone’s character in a good way; it teaches him/her the discipline, how to work and tolerate each other and how to have a good sportsmanship. Thus, the whole team works together in order to achieve its main goal. Being a member in team sports teaches the participants the discipline, and what they have to do in order to respect the law and each other too. It clarifies to the participants the importance of respect between the members that organize one group and how they should be one hand in order to win or achieve their goals. In addition, It teaches them how to respect the time; in other words it informs them the importance of respecting the time and don’t be late to any meeting or training. Moreover, a member of a team should practice every day in order to be a professional athlete; and this daily training helps him to organize his/her life, and with time he/she won’t skip this organization. Thus, it makes self-discipline for his life. For example, the famous athletes who play basketball game practice every day in order to be much better in every game. Consequently, they organize their lives according to this style. Rare people possess sportsmanship, and they rarely tolerate each other; everyone has his/her own problems, and he/she gets angry because of silly things. However, joining a team and especially a team concerned by sport contributes to plant the sportsmanship in the personality of every participant. In addition, it teaches them not only how to become a good leader and what they should do to lead, but also how to take direction from someone else and implement them without nagging. Many famous basketball players usually say in interviews on television that participating in team sports help people to know how to act and interact well with other. For example, while playing, they know from one look what they should do and which plan they have to undertake in order to get more points. Furthermore, all members take the directions from one leader which is the coach of the team who organizes everything and all respect him and his ideas. Thus, working in a team develops many important skills and stuffs that people must have in order to succeed and have better life. Although all the beneficial things that team sports deliver to his member, there are many people who still believe that joining a team, like this one, is just for fun and there are no lessons can be learned from it. However, many sociologists and professional people say that participating in a team sports is for fun, but the participants learn new anonymous things which can be useful in their daily life. For instance, a football game player must be aware and know where and when he should give his colleague a quick pass in order to put a goal. This quick pass is the same thing as a quick decision that people must take in real life, but they should know the beat place and time to do it. Therefore, even the athletes are doing what they love and having fun, but they are also learning valuable lesson that can use them in their live. Last but not least, teams and especially team sports help to build the character because they teach the discipline, how to respect others member who are in the same group and work together to achieve their main goal. Moreover, it teaches the members how to deal in some hard situations and shows them the importance of having sportsmanship. Therefore, the parents shouldn’t prevent their children from participating in these teams because like they learn in school important tasks, they will also learn much important tasks in these teams. In my opinion, the tasks learned in teams are more important and beneficial than the ones learned in school because people will use them more, and they affect their entire life and their social status.

Remy Rhayem:Believe in Yourself

Believe in Yourself Michelangelo said, “I hope that I may always desire more than I can accomplish.” This statement reflects my personality because I really enjoy having some difficult goals and dreams that are hard to accomplish. Therefore, I know the real meaning of success. Working hard on a project and spending very long time to do it perfectly is something good because eventually I know that I will take high grades. I believe that this kind of hope leads to real success. Usually, when a person puts a goal to achieve, one does his/her best in order to get what he/she aspires. Thus, even if the dream is quiet impossible, the person will try to do the best to get it; and he/she will attain it. In the same vein, William Shakespeare said, “If there is a good will, there is a great way.” Will is a “must”; it is the state that encourages the wish of positive outcomes. An example of the abovementioned would be when I was at school, and the administration organized a Christmas concert prepared by students. The director told me that he chose me to present the concert. I had been shocked because I didn't have any idea about presenting, standing in front a lot of people and speaking without fear. However, I accepted the challenge, and I decided to be strong and confident in order to eliminate that fear. Consequently, I practiced every day. The big day came. I went to the concert with another personality; I looked like a girl that nothing could stop her encouragement, passion and determination in her own life. I was that strong girl who could do anything to achieve her goals. Finally, I presented that concert and all the attendants had been satisfied because I saw their smile on their face all the time. As such, every person has to put some goals even if he / she believe that they are difficult and impossible to realize. When you work hard, you will surely be able to get what you want. Although you work hard sometimes, you don't get what you want; don’t let this break you down because certainly you have a good and beneficial experience. Always put goals and work hard to achieve them. To sum up, now, I believe that I should not refuse and give up directly before thinking because this suggestion may be so useful for me.

Remy Rhayem:Be Strong

Be Strong As Malcolm X said, “Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery.” Life is too short; no one knows when and where his/her life will stop. Thus, we should live it correctly and peacefully. We should be greedy and want everything for us to satisfy our needs. Surely, we should respect each other because we are all human beings that have rights and duties. We have the probability to do mistakes, and that is not a flaw. Moreover, we should respect and obey the laws of the country where we live. We should also respect the environment which is the second house for the citizens. It is very important to respect it because our health and our life are related to it. If we pollute it, we will hurt our health which is the precious thing we have. The life is based on these things, and if they aren’t presented on someone’s attitude, he/ she, in my opinion, should be out of this earth because at least we should be peaceful, courteous, modest and respectful toward the others and the whole society. However, this doesn’t mean that we keep silent if the others hurt us. Besides these good qualities, we should have strong personality in order to adapt with some “monsters” that live with us, and they are trying to put us down every time. We should be aware of our rights and save them. My father has raised me in a perfect way. He has taught me that I should respect all people, obey the laws, and be courteous and modest, but if someone doesn’t show me respect or hurt my dignity, I will show him my second face. I will show him that I am not the girl that no one in any way can take her rights and hurt her dignity. Therefore, everyone should be strong and save her/his rights because no one wants the good for the other.

Remy Rhayem:Are You a Man?

Are You a Man? It is said, “There is a great woman behind every successful man.” Women are the tenderness, love, care and smartness. They should be sacred and protected from any danger. Moreover, they should live a wonderful life full of respect, safety and love. Unfortunately, some women aren’t satisfied with their lives. There are many women who are abused and mistreated from their husbands. They don’t declare and tell to anyone, but they stay silenced and bear the torment. Recently, many crimes occurred, and we saw that on TV. Last crime was about a woman who died due to severe beatings caused by her husband who hit her cruelly. He didn’t have pity and mercy, but he is a monster. He smashes her skull by a pressure cooker. In addition, after beating her for a long time, he kept her in a closed room with her mother and sister without a cellphone. All that in order to torture them, but there is no clear reason to clarify why he hit her. The police arrested him after two days for the crime, and he had been in the prison waiting to sentence him. In the same case, the person who struck their sons should have the same destiny. He should have a cruel punishment because children are innocent and weak. They should have a lot of care, love and tenderness in order to grow up normally. A day, while I was sitting on the balcony, I heard a loud noise coming from our neighbors’ house. My father and I run quickly to know what happened. The door was opened, and the floor was covered with blood. We followed the blood stains, and suddenly we saw the wife dumped on the floor, and her body was covered with blood. We called the ambulance and the police. After 2 minutes, they arrived and begun to investigate in order to know who is the assailant, and they took the victim to the hospital. After a short time, we knew that her husband hit her a lot because she didn’t prepare food for him. Therefore, they took him to the prison, and he still inside the prison till now. In my opinion, those people, in other words, those “animals” should be put to death. They think that they are strong because they can hit a woman. In contrast, they are very weak because they attack a woman who is weaker physically. If they are really strong, they will hit who have their same strength. Finally, women should be respected because they are the foundation of the society. Furthermore, there are many NGOs that work hard to defend women’s right, especially whose are abused and battered. Moreover, all women should protest and say “Enough” to domestic violence.

Remy Rhayem:Amazing Experience

Amazing Experience Rob Mckenna said, “You can study government and politics in school, but the best way to really understand the process is to volunteer your time.” Really, volunteering in an activity that has a good purpose is something special and unique, and no one can describe it correctly because of its deep meaning. That is because helping others is appreciative and the most important thing one can do. The first volunteer activity for the spring semester was with D-RASATI project. That project had been held to help public schools in Lebanon by acquiring them by ICT equipment. However, every two members of USP went to a school in order to know the case of each school and if they use technology while teaching students. But before visiting schools, we did training on campus to know what we will do. The trainers were very good; they gave us all details about every single question in order to know how to answer director’s questions. In addition, they answered all students’ questions without nagging. On March 1st, I went to my previous school. I was very excited to see how it will be after leaving it. I arrived with my partner, and we waited few seconds the director to come. When he arrived, he was very happy by seeing us after a long time. He asked us about the university and our majors. Moreover, when I got into the school I felt that something I can’t express it came into my heart. For a short time, I remembered everything happened with me there. I remembered where I was sitting with my friends, where I stood up to go into the class, and how the director was shouting on students while doing something wrong. After that, two employees joined us, and we began the interview. They knew what we will ask, so they were prepared everything and especially the questions that need numbers and teachers’ name. After doing these questions with them, we moved to survey the photocopiers, printers, fax and computers at their office. Then, we moved to the IT lab to check the computers there to collect and the needed information. Finally, we thanked them for their help, and we went back to our home. Honestly, it was a tremendous and beneficial experience because I went back to my previous school where I spent three unforgettable years mixed with happiness, sadness, anxious and fear. Furthermore, I met again these beautiful people who gave me a lot of things and now they have been proud of me because I were very intelligent, I got the scholarship, and I was helping to improve my school to be better. Thus, all what I did, and I will do help me to be a good leader and an effective member in my society.

Remy Rhayem:Air Pollution as a Fatal Problem

Air Pollution as a Fatal Problem As Gale (2014) has indicated, human beings rely on air to live and breathe, but they are responsible for making the air polluted. This issue is considered one of the major problems in Lebanon and some other countries. It is the most important problem that threat people every second. Air pollution results from many dangerous causes, and it leads to momentous effects. People and the government as well should move rapidly in order to stop it before it stops the humanity. In addition, people who contribute to increase the pollution must have a cruel punishment because they jeopardize everything on this earth. Air pollution has momentous influence on people’s life; it causes many health problems that put their lives in danger. Researchers say that air pollution is evaluated to cause approximately 2 million premature deaths worldwide per year (Bhola R. Gurjar, Luisa T. Molina, and Chandra S.P. Ojha, 2014). For that reason this issue must be stopped now. First, air pollution is caused by the smoke deliberated from cars and industries; “The smoke produced from these cars contains miniscule particles that escape into the atmosphere. These particles form black carbon, which is one of the most common forms of air pollution. Moreover, by burning fuel fossils, noxious gases will be released into the atmosphere such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide” (Gale, 2014). Thus, when a person breathes the polluted air, the dangerous particles come into his/her body, and they increase every day, so the function of the lung decreases gradually. As Ismail Abbas (Daily star, 2010) has mentioned, there is a study has shown that the risk of childhood cancer in Lebanon is raised because of widespread pollutants like the nitrogen dioxide which presents in the air. Furthermore, this issue causes troubles in the respiratory system such as difficulty breathing and coughing. In addition, air pollution has a bad influence in the nervous system counting the brain that can be totally affected because of the poisonous gases existing in the air. Polluted air also impacts severely the environment and the ecosystem as well. To begin with Global warming, also known as climate change is another momentous consequence of air pollution. An excess of carbon dioxide will exist in the air, so the temperature will increase making the climate hotter. For that reason, the ice in the two poles melt, the average of water will rise gradually, and many floods will occur (Gale, 2014). For instance, many floods have occurred this year because of the melting ice that leads to an increase in the oceans’ water, and especially the Asian region such as Japan and Philippine. Additionally, the ozone and its layer will be affected; the layer becomes thinner and weaker, so the ultraviolet rays enter to the earth. For that reason, the temperature will increase gradually and it affects the growth of animals and plants too (Environmental Encyclopedia, 2011). Therefore, the CO2 will not be absorbed regularly by the plants, and the ecosystem will be in danger. Some animals will die, and some rare animals will extinct. Moreover, these toxic pollutants form the acid rain that damages the trees, crops, lakes, oceans and the “aquatic life” at all such as fishes and plants under water. There are many people who are contributing in increasing the rate of air pollution; they are not concerned and focused how this issue is very hazardous. A group of these people is the crushers’ owners who don’t care about the environment and what happen with it; they only care about the money. Although they distort the beauty of nature and pollute the air, they don’t even rehabilitate the land. However, they continue working in bad situations, and they say, “We want to make money to live”. The most important thing that these people should consider is that they prefer money on their lives and their children’s lives. In addition, by making the air polluted, they increase the number of diseases, so they will be attacked by them and they will spend this money to get rid of the dangerous illnesses. As a result, they aren’t benefited from anything, but they jeopardize everything. Therefore, these works must have strict laws that put them between clear limits. In case of disrespecting these laws, rigorous measurements must be taken. In conclusion, agreeing to the information elaborated in this paper, air pollution influences all aspects of people’s health and the environment too. Therefore, people should move quickly to save their permanent lives and the life of the coming generation. The environment is the second house for citizens where they relax and take all their essential needs such as air, water, vegetables, meat and many others. Some people tend to forget how air pollution is injurious, and they are less focused about the future consequences. Moreover, the government must move quickly to limit losses. In contrast, it is not obliged to make new rules to decrease this problem, it can only apply the rules that aren’t respected (Ismail Abbas, 2010, the Daily star). In line with Ismail Abbas (2010), for example the government must apply annually tests for vehicles to be sure that they are safe and friendly to the environment. Consequently, people must take this problem more seriously because if they still at the same rate, an inevitable death is waiting for them, so they should be aware and find effective solutions from now before it’s too late.

Remy Rhayem:After Life

After Life Lao Tzu said, “Life and death are one thread, the same line viewed from different sides.” Most of people are afraid from death. They are frightened to lose their life on earth between their lovers and go to another unknown world. Maybe they are frightened from the idea to leave to this world that we don’t know anything about. Although I am scared from death, I think that will be better from our current world because now there is no mercy, no pity and no equivalence between people. Everyone needs himself without caring about others. They kill each other simply like when a man kills an aunt that upsets him. They don’t think that there are families behind these victims. The conscience and morality are died nowadays. Therefore, no one cares about his life anymore because it becomes very cheap. Death is the only thing that people be equal in. Death doesn’t distinguish between poor and rich, educated and non-educated. Everyone will die a day, so there is no discrimination with God. However, death is very difficult and especially when we lose someone we love. We think that the life will stop and we can’t continue as we have been. When my grandmother passed away, I felt depressed, sad, hopeless and desperate because she had lived with us since I was born. She loved me a lot, and I was her preferred granddaughter. I cried a lot, and she came into my dream every night. Two weeks later, I became better and stronger because the life will continue. Therefore, death maybe is better than life and maybe no, we can’t know the truth. The only thing we know is losing someone is so injurious, but this is the life. It’s full of success, happiness, sadness and failure. Thus, we should live it in all aspects and do whatever we want because we live once.

Paula Nahoum:Be Happy

Be Happy Confucius said: “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” Last week, I had training on life skills. The workshop was beneficial and entertaining at the same time. It was for three successive days with two effective trainers: a lady and men. In this training, we discussed many interesting topics that helped us to face the problems. In addition, we learned that we should always look at the bright side of the problem. Furthermore, I enjoyed the training because we learned by playing. The purpose of this activity was to learn the secrets of life and to deal with our problems by looking at the positive point in it. Moreover, we learned the basis of the dialogue. In addition, we learned how to listen to each other to have a successful dialogue. This training helped and affected me a lot. I knew form this activity that I should live the present time and always look at the positive side. Additionally, I learned the seven virtues and the vices that I should avoid them. The training was perfect, and I loved the trainers. They were friendly and close to us. However, we were very tired in these three days, because they were consecutive. Additionally, the place was in a room which made me feel a little bit boring. After this training, I will be an optimistic person and I will think that everything has a solution. Also, I will express my feelings because it will help me to feel better if I am in a bad situation. Finally, I will always try to look at the bright side of the problem and know how to overcome it.

Paula Nahoum:Treasured Experience

Treasured Experience “Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted. And experience is often the most valuable thing you have to offer,” said Randy Pausch. As a part of our scholarship, volunteering activities are related in our academic progression. On March 1st, D-RASATI organized an activity of visiting official high school in our regions. We had to make a small interview with the principal of the school to collect some information to fill in a survey. First, I was chosen to go to a remote school that I have never heard about it before. The director was a lady and it was noticeable that she didn't prepare the needed information. For this reason, the activity took time, but it was extraordinary and I enjoyed it. In addition, my partner and I cooperated to fill this survey. The purpose was to help the needed official high schools. This purpose could be accomplished by providing these schools in technological equipment such as computers and trainers. Moreover, the target was to improve students in using technological machines. At the beginning, I was a little bit shy and hesitant because I was interviewed with a stranger person, but after that I became more confident. This activity helped and affected me to improve my personality and make other achievements in my portfolio. From this event, I learned how to do an interview and how I should ask the questions. I became more experienced when the interview went well. However, it might be good if the director was more aware of what the interview was about and if she prepared some data. Additionally, it might be better if the principal knew what the questions were so she could be more flexible. Finally, the interview taught me lesson in interviewing and how to be more confident. For that reason, I will be ready to make other interviews in order to help schools or any other community. Besides, this activity made me more knowledgeable and ready to volunteer at any time.

Paula Nahoum:When to Say No to Fear

When to Say No to Fear Habeeb Akande said, “Fear of failure prevents you from realizing your dreams of success.” Four years ago, when I was in grade nine, I was on the edge to transfer from the school to the high school. This edge was the official exam that I had to pass. At the beginning, my classmates and I had a long period – about a month - to study and get prepared for this exam. Actually, I spent that whole month studying and revising. However, I felt it passed quickly as a wink. Moreover, I was thoroughly ready to the exam, but I feared of failure and defeat. I had never been more reluctant in my life at that moment. When I came into the hall, my heart started beating fast and I felt anxious. I was completely lost because it was the first time that I had such exam. When the supervisor put the papers in front of me, the fear on my face was noticeable and remarkable. I wasn’t able to write my name: my hands were shaking. In addition, the hall was crowded and everybody was wary and cautious. After a short time, when all the other students began writing, I felt relaxed and I remembered all the information that I needed. After the first exam ended, I knew that this fear was prevalent for all students and it wasn’t only my case. When I forgot my fear, I was able to focus and answer the majority of questions. At the end, I know after this experience that fear can lead you to failure. If I didn’t overcome my trepidation, I wouldn’t successes and pass the exam. I advise every person to not let fear dominate his personality because it has a lot of negative effects.

Paula Nahoum:Be Confident

Be Confident “Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy,” said Norman Vincent Peale. When I was in the school, the director proposed to organize a special play for mothers’ day. It was an amazing idea because mothers would be very happy and proud of seeing their children on the stage. They would be also so excited to watch their own kids presenting their valuable gift. For that reason, our teacher was responsible of preparing the play. Thus, she had to choose the students who wanted to participate in this act. In addition, she had to distribute the role of each student. She gave me the principal role because she felt that I was able to act properly. I was so content to present a major part of the play. However, I was frightened of forgetting my script or acting wrong. I spent many days practicing and memorizing the line script. Finally, the 21st of March came. My mother didn’t know that I was going to present the main role. I hid it to surprise her, and she really was. She was joyful and astonished because she didn’t notice before that I was a talented actor. When I was seeing joy expression came over her face, I forgot all the fear and tiredness. At the end, I learned that if I didn’t believe in my abilities and tried to improve them, I didn’t success. Believing in our own powers, in addition to practice and exercise, can make us do the impossible.

Paula Nahoum:My Hero

My Hero Markus Zusak said in The Book Thief, “Sometimes I think my papa is an accordion. When he looks at me and smiles and breathes, I hear the notes.” Father’s love is unreplaceable. He is the one who loves you since you were born for no reason, just because you are his adorable child. It is known that the girl is attached to her father more than boy. My father is my king, my hero, is the person who works whole the day to provide me all I want. Moreover, my father is the most important person in my life; he always protects me and helps me to take my right decisions. He does anything impossible to make me and my family happy. In addition, a father is not only a person who brings me to this world. He is all my life. Furthermore, he is the person I run to when something happens to me, whether it is something good or not. I told him any story I read, I narrate him my days. My father is the person who listens to me smiling and hugging. My father is the person I feel safe with him. If I am afraid, he is always beside me. Finally, father’s love is endless and limitless. He gives from all his heart without asking why and what for. He is generous. He is proud of me and I am proud of him.

Paula Nahoum:Beneficial Experience

Beneficial Experience Maya Angelou said, “When you know better you do better.” Last Saturday, USAID group organized a trip for us. The trip was to Blom Bank Verdun in order to attend a presentation performed by BLOM Shabeb. Since we are 18 year-old-youth, it is necessary to be aware of some banking issues. At the beginning, I thought that the presentation will be very tedious, but, at the end, it turned out to be so beneficial and interesting. First, I liked the way of the presenter, she attracted my attention. She was very organized and exciting. Moreover, I learned much new information from this presentation such as knowing the types of different account, calculating the interest of the account, learning the difference between credit and debit card… The presenter gave us many examples to understand more about these subjects. In addition, we filled a feedback form in which we expressed our opinion concerning the presentation. Of course, my comments were positive and encouraging. Finally, they offered us a privilege card that presented some discount on many stores. After this presentation, my knowledge of banking increased and I knew important stuffs related to Banks. Finally, I liked that journey and I hope to join more lectures because they are useful and cultural.

Paula Nahoum:Making Choices

Making Choices Mary Balogh said once, “Every moment is a moment of decision, and every moment turns us inexorably in the direction of the rest of our lives.” Of course, every one of us will make a decision in his life, at least once. Depending on the gravity of the situations, few decisions can be taken quickly but not all. Since I was in the senior year of high school, I had to choose a specific major to my university. This decision was extremely difficult because it is highly important and related to my future. This little decision was able to affect and change my whole life. Therefore, I had to think critically and carefully. I was puzzled between several majors that I liked the most: Medical Laboratory, Environmental Health and Chemistry. Being confused, I asked my parents, friends and teachers to help me making the right decision. However, each teacher advised me in a different way. They told me to do what I liked, because there is no “Best Major.” I really thought for many days and nights, but now I’m convinced with what I chose. Medical Laboratory was and still my choice. This is what I want to be. Last year, I learned a lesson. Making decisions is not that easy. In addition, decisions can turn our life upside down, making it better or worse. Many people make wrong decisions, but they don’t have to regret them. They have to move on in their life.
